The Brazos Water Snake is also known as Harter’s water snake named for Philip
Harter who caught reptiles up and down the Brazos selling them to museums and collectors. In
1933 he sent a small brown snake to Cornell University for identification. Eventually the experts
decided it was an unknown snake and named it in honor of the man locals called “Snakey
Harter.”
